Dixon is Player of the Year, Fort Myers is top team

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- South Fort Myers senior Antwan Dixon is the WINK Sports High School Football Player of the Year. Dixon returned to the Wolfpack this year after missing last season because of a rare blood disease (aplastic anemia). Dixon completely changed his lifestyle and he takes six pills a day to be able to deal with the disease.

Doctors cleared him to play this season and Dixon didn’t ease himself back in. The 5-foot-8 player was a wide receiver and cornerback and also played sometimes as a running back and quarterback. He also returned punts and kicks and held for field goals and extra points. Dixon helped lead South Fort Myers to the third round of the Class 6A playoffs, the Wolfpack finished 10-3.

Dixon rushed for 343 yards on 23 carriers (14.9 yards per carry). He scored 5 touchdowns rushing, 7 receiving and 4 as a kick/punt returner. Dixon also threw for 74 yards and a touchdown. He had 48 catches for 639 yards. Defensively he had 35 tackles and 20 pass breakups. Dixon was a lock-down corner and most opponents didn’t even throw in his direction because he was covering the receiver so well.

Dixon says he’s honored to be named WINK Sports Player of the Year, “it makes me feel happy after missing last year and it’s just, I’ve gotten so many awards this year over the football season, it’s just a blessing,” said Dixon.

Dixon’s head coach at South Fort Myers calls Dixon “lightning in a bottle.”

“He has worked himself very, very hard to get where he’s at. He comes to work everyday. He’s a lot like Sammy Watkins, when he gets on the field it’s all business,” said Wolfpack head coach Grant Redhead.

Dixon is getting interest from a number of division one colleges but he hasn’t made up his mind on where he’ll play next year. It will likely be as a cornerback.

Naples quarterback Michael Walker, Immokalee running back Taeler Porter, Lely running back Tupac Isme, Fort Myers running back Terrance Moore and Fort Myers wide receiver/safety James Brunson were the other finalists for Player of the Year.

Fort Myers is the WINK Sports Team of the Year. The Green Wave (12-1) end the season as the number one team ahead of Clewiston (11-1), Naples (10-2), South Fort Myers (10-3) and Island Coast (10-3).
