For parents, nothing is better than seeing their child succeed.

Just ask Richard Doyle.

“It’s exciting for us, believe me,” said Doyle.

His son, Bishop Verot grad Ricky Doyle , just locked down a starting role for Michigan basketball — as a freshman.

“A lot of people [have been] coming up to me and saying ‘we’re so proud of Ricky,'” said Doyle.

Ricky Doyle made his first career start for Michigan on Saturday.

Since then, he’s been red-hot.

On Monday, the true freshman scored a team-high 16 points in the Wolverines’ win over Coppin State.

Ann Arbor may be thousands of miles away — but Ricky Doyle’s success is proving that big-time players can come from small programs. Bishop Verot High School has an enrollment of less than 700 students.

“If you come in and work, everyday at being the best you can be, you can succeed, ” said Matt Herting, the head basketball coach at Bishop Verot.

“That’s what Ricky did.”

Ricky’s parents weren’t the only ones gushing about his recent success.

“It couldn’t happen to a nicer person,” said Herting.

“Ricky always was a super-hard worker, great student, selfless teammate. To see it happen to someone like that, it’s really special.”

Doyle and Michigan get back to action on December 30th against Illinois.
