South Trail firefighters honor one of their own

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- South Trail firefighters are honoring one of their own who recently lost a battle with cancer.

On Monday, Engine 63 was dedicated to 49-year-old Danielle DiBenedetto.

Her name is now on the front of the engine. The truck was used by DiBenedetto when responding to emergencies.

Inside the truck, DiBenedetto’s bunker gear is strapped in a seat so she can continue her calls for service.

“It just reminds me of Dani. She is now always with us. Every fire we go on, every medical emergency we go on, Dani is leading the way. Her life was dedicated to saving others and she continues to do this. This truck is Dani,” said Chief William Lombardo.

DiBenedetto was diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2013. The South Trail Fire Department announced her passing Saturday afternoon.

Monday night, flags are being flown at all Lee County fire stations in DiBenedetto’s honor.
