Lee County sheriff’s captain prays with lightning victim’s brothers

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.- WINK News is hearing the desperate calls for help moments after lightning hit two men in Bonita Springs.

Right now, one of those men is in critical condition. We’re hearing from a Lee County sheriff’s captain who took a private moment to comfort the victim’s brothers.

The victim’s friend says his heart did stop for a few moments after he was struck, but it was the quick response by the other workers and two deputies that saved his life.

“I won’t speak about what we prayed about. That’s kind of personal,” said Captain Keith Day.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Our partners at the News-Press captured the moment Day prayed with two men, moments after their brother Rigoberto Diaz-Segura was struck by lightning.

“I know there is nothing humanly I can say to help them in that time. It’s a gut wrenching feeling,” said Day.

Day says Wednesday’s tragedy hits close to home.

“Without getting into to much detail, I had a family member die in front of me in a tragic accident. I understand how they were feeling at the time not knowing if their brother was going to live or die,” said Day.

Two Lee County deputies were first responders on scene. They took over CPR.

“Our deputies did an awesome job. Deputy Bryce Hardin, Lt. Lee were first on scene and began CPR until paramedics arrived. Those first two to three seconds are very vital.”

Day says the workers are all brothers and have worked everyday together for the last 15 years.

“I understand all those emotions those guys were feeling at the time.”

The roofing company’s owner says the guys were finishing up for the day when the lighting hit his employee.

“We feel useless. We have all these tools on our belt and we can’t do anything. But the most powerful tool we possess is the power of prayer.”
