Rebuilding after a storm

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – After a storm, you may be in a hurry to rebuild, but if you rush the process, you may not get your money’s worth.

Experts suggest vetting contractors now so you know who to call immediately after a storm. No matter who you decide to go with, make sure that contractor is licensed, insured and bonded. You can contact the state or your local municipality to check his or her license status. Also, ask the contractor for references and make sure you reach out to those references.

After a major disaster people from all over show up, trying to get your business. Be wary of people soliciting work door-to-door. If they do not have a permanent place of business, they are not local and are not licensed locally and cannot provide a tax ID number or business license, that may be a red flag. You also want to avoid putting down big down payments. Experts also suggest that in your contract, you get a city or county inspection before the final payment.
