SWFL gives back to dozens of dogs rescued in DeSoto County

DESOTO COUNTY, Fla.- People from around the country are giving back to the Great Dane community.

Two weeks ago, dozens of Great Danes and other breeds were confiscated from unbearable living conditions in Arcadia.

Donations of food and medicine are being delivered by the truck-load. The boxes are filling up the rooms at DeSoto County Animal Control.

“We gave up our break room and both sheds are full, the back end has things stacked up in the medical room,” said supervisor Debby Merkin.

The more than 60 dogs were saved from unlivable conditions after deputies found them malnourished and covered in ticks and fleas.

Now, thanks to support from Southwest Florida resients and others around the country, the dogs are getting better every day.

“They’re coming from all over the place, we have, when we unpacked there boxes that they are donated in we’ve had cards from hawaii, pick a state.. from basically all over the nation,” said Merkin.

More than 6,000 pounds of dog food fill the storage areas, along with boxes of medicine and even some treats for our furry friends.

“We had two trucks show up at one time. One of them was 84 boxes in the UPS truck and the other truck, I couldn’t tell you, it was pallets load,” said manager George Hernandez.

Beyond the dozens of boxes, more than $5,700 has been donated to the Great Dane account at the Seacoast Bank in Arcadia. That money will be used to pay for the dogs’ vet bills.

“It’s amazing how much support we’ve gotten from the community,” said Hernandez.
