FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A 10-year-old boy is dead and his 11-year-old friend is in the hospital after the bicycle they were riding on was hit by a car near Fort Lauderdale.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office said Douglas Sams died at a hospital following the Tuesday night crash.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gina Carter says Sams was pedaling and Anthony Robinson was standing on the rear pegs as the left the parking lot of Palmview Elementary School on Tuesday night. Robinson suffered a broken femur.

Carter says the bike was struck by a car driven by 24-year-old Herbie Pierre-Paul of Boca Raton. He told authorities his vision was blocked by a vehicle parked on the swale. He said he swerved but couldn’t avoid hitting the bike.

Detectives say speed doesn’t appear to be a factor.
