Looters strike Fort Myers pastor’s home during Irma

FORT MYERS, Fla. Looters targeted a home near Jefferson Park after the homeowners evacuated ahead of Hurricane Irma.

Fort Myers pastor Brent Taylor and his girlfriend Rachel Steffens returned home to find a damaged door frame, broken window and missing music equipment.

“The equipment and things that were stolen is what we use for the ministry to bless other people,” Steffens said.

There is no security footage of the looters in action, because the storm created a massive power outage.

“As a pastor, somebody who is in the christian faith of life, you try to give as much as you can, but that doesn’t remove you from the feelings of anger or frustration,” Taylor said.

Taylor and Steffens estimate $20,000 to $50,000 worth of damages.

“You have to look differently leading people. You have to go, ‘That’s stuff. I’m angered, I’m frustrated, but how do we respond?’ And so we’re going to respond by helping others,” Taylor said.

The couple plans to hold a fundraiser for anyone who needs help after Hurricane Irma.

“If you feel like looting and stealing things is the best you can do, that’s not true. You have so much more worth and value in you,” Steffens said.
