HOMESTEAD, Fla.- 21-year-old Ross Chastain will be racing in Friday’s truck series and Saturday’s Nationwide.

Chastain is from Alva and went to Riverdale High School. Thursday WINK News spoke exclusively with Chastain as he prepared for the big weekend.

“There’s no right or wrong way to get to the NASCAR Sprint Cup series because everybody is doing it a little bit different.”

Chastain will be driving number 35 and said the track is ‘slick and tough,’ but he is ready. He’s known as the ‘Watermelon Guy’ to some announcers. Chastain’s family owns a watermelon farm in North Fort Myers.

“My family’s been farming forever, we’ve been farming watermelons way before I was ever thought of.”

Chastain his past is helping him get where he is today. Currently, the National Watermelon Association sponsors him. His hope is to earn enough sponsors to make this a full-time gig.

At this point, Chastain has not won a NASCAR race.

WINK News will have full coverage after both of Chastain’s races this weekend.
