DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say they’ve arrested a man who is a member of a large check fraud ring that specializes in stealing mail from mailboxes in four central Florida counties.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1BWLIC0 ) reports 33-year-old Carl Croyl is one of 15 people who Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators say have been taking mail in Volusia, Flagler, Seminole and St. Johns counties. He was arrested Tuesday.

Officials say the group committed $30,000 to $40,000 in check fraud.

According to investigators, the suspects drive around targeting mailboxes that have their flags raised. They open the mail looking for checks, then alter them to reflect a different payee and a higher amount.

The investigation began in October.

Croyl is in jail, charged with multiple felonies. Records don’t reflect whether he’s hired an attorney.
