Same-sex marriages begin in Southwest Florida

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Lee County issued its first same sex marriage licenses early Tuesday morning. The clerk of court’s office opened early at 7:30 a.m. to allow couples to begin the process.

A handful were lined up outside before the clerk’s office opened.

Dozens crowded the clerk’s office and cheered as licenses were issued. Many people said they never thought this day would come in Florida.

As of 9 a.m., Lee County issued 17 same sex marriage licenses and performed three marriage ceremonies.
