Hunger Walk approaching, donations still needed

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS, Fla.- The WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk is just days away but we still need your help to reach our goal. The total is up to more than $248,000 but that’s still shy of the $315,000 goal.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank feeds tens of thousands of families every month through its partner agencies, and the Hunger Walk is the biggest fundraiser of the year to keep the shelves stocked and food on the table.

Harry Chapin Director of Development Miriam Pereira says, “there are so many people out there who are still in need, they aren’t making as much as they used to before the recession or they are still having trouble finding a job. So we depend on the community to help us with events like this.”

She adds 40 percent of the people they help are kids.

“They can be the kids who sit next to your kids in your child’s classroom, they could be the kids at your child’s bus stop on your way home from work in the afternoon or on your way to work in the morning, They’re seniors, 10 percent of them are seniors and the vast majority of them have jobs they just aren’t getting paid what they used to.”
