FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Fort Myers Police Department announced the passing of Police K9 Indy.

Over the two weeks prior to his death, officials say Indy began suffering severe gastrointestinal complications that led to his rapid demise.

Indy began his service with the police department in March of 2005, under the care of his partner, Sergeant Enrico Doro. Due to a change in Sergeant Doro’s assignment, Indy was reassigned to Officer Jeremy Hawkins in December of 2008. Officer Hawkins and Indy spent the last six years together until Indy’s passing on Sunday.

Throughout their career, Officer Hawkins and Indy spent every day together while on and off duty. Officer Hawkins and Indy served our City with pride spending countless hours training, tracking fleeing felons, searching buildings, finding narcotics, and volunteering in hundreds of demonstrations for children and special events.

K9 Indy’s notable statistics include:
1,400 Hours of Training
1,550 Deployments
120 Building Searches
116 Tracks
1,280 Narcotics Searches
27 Felons Apprehended

“K9 Indy was a beloved member of our law enforcement family. The faithful service and protection he provided will always be remembered,” said Police Chief Douglas Baker.
