Overnight crashes close U.S. 41

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fort Myers Police had their hands full late Thursday night and into Friday morning, after three separate crashes all in the same area closed US 41 north of Page Field.

The initial crash happened around 11:15 p.m. Thursday, involving a motorcycle and a vehicle. Fort Myers Police say witnesses told them speed was a factor in that crash.

While officers were investigating, a drunk driver traveling on US 41 plowed into a Fort Myers Police patrol car that was blocking the scene. Shortly after that, a second drunk driver plowed into another Fort Myers Police patrol car, who was also blocking the scene.

Both officers were out of their vehicles when their cars were hit and were not hurt. Both drivers were arrested for DUI. The motorcycle driver in the original crash was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

Both north and southbound lanes of US.41 re-opened at 4:30 Friday morning.
