Smoke alarms will not alert fire departments after phone company goes out of business

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Firefighters across Collier County are sounding the alarm. They say several communities were unexpectedly dropped by their phone company and those customers smoke alarms won’t alert the fire department in an emergency.

The phone company, TQC Communications unexpectedly went out of business and never notified their customers or local fire departments of the situation.  Now, fire inspectors in the City of Naples and in North Naples are having to physically check on different communities to make sure someone notifies them in case of an emergency.

“We have had our inspectors since last night roaming around to different areas,” said Deputy Chief Eloy Ricardo with the North Collier Fire Control and Rescue District. “But, its a needle in a haystack.”

Some property managers notified the fire department when they realized their phones were out, but other customers may not understand the ramifications of not having landline service.

Former TQC customers are being told to contact Century Link to hook up service, like residents at Mira Vista Condominiums in North Naples.  But, the switch could take days because no one knows how many people used TQC or where these people lived, leaving communities and the people who live there at risk.

“I am upset with the way TQC handled this issue,” said Deputy Chief Ricardo.

Firefighters are asking if there’s a fire or an emergency to please use your cell phone to call 911, because it could take several days to get everyone hooked up on a new phone system.
