PONCE INLET, Fla. (AP) – A loggerhead sea turtle named Alice is back in the Atlantic Ocean after rehabbing at Volusia County Marine Science Center.

The turtle was released Tuesday, nine months after stranding on a St. Augustine beach last June. She was covered in barnacles and weighed just 121 pounds. A veterinarian determined she was suffering from severe pneumonia and a microbacterial infection.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1COdnbg ) reports the infection had spread to the turtle’s right shoulder joint and was causing her to favor her right front flipper.

She was treated with antibiotics for six months and has now gained 34 pouinds.
