WASHINGTON (AP) – The Obama administration has notified Congress that it is selling Pakistan $952 million worth of attack helicopters, air-to-surface missiles and other forms of military assistance.

The State Department says the deal would help a vital counterterrorism partner and advance U.S. national security.

The 15 Viper helicopters would offer Pakistan precision striking and the ability to operate high altitudes, useful for operations against militants in mountainous regions.

Pakistan also would get 1,000 Hellfire missiles, engines, computers, radar and targeting technology, navigations and communications systems.

The deal is to be implemented over a period of 5 ½ years, involving technical support, training and maintenance by U.S. personnel.

Pakistan and the U.S. say their relations have significantly improved over the last couple of years.
