NEW YORK- After a grueling five years, a shelter dog has finally found his home sweet home.

Chester the pit bull spent about 36 dog years going from shelter to shelter.

Last Wednesday, the North Fork Animal Welfare League on Long Island posted a photo of the dog on Facebook.

In the picture, the forlorn dog hangs his head over a heartwarming sign, promising to be good and love his new family.

“Why doesn’t anybody want me? I’ve been waiting 5 years. Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. So why has no one adopted me? I promise to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are my new family. I sit and wait for you to come,” the sign reads.

The post quickly went viral, getting more than 20,000 shares and over 2,800 likes.

On Friday, the organization announced the good news that Chester found his perfect match.

He spent Easter with his new family in Michigan.
