SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. (AP) – Police say a homeless man beat and strangled a dog on a South Daytona sidewalk.

Dispatchers received dozens of calls from people reporting the Sunday afternoon beating. Police found the young dachshund dead on the sidewalk along with an ID belonging to 56-year-old Ray Comer.

Comer was arrested a short time later and charged with felony animal cruelty.

Witnesses told police the man shook, beat and strangled the dog named Baby Susie.

According to a police affidavit, officers cited Comer earlier Sunday for an animal ordinance violation.

Police say Comer used a shoelace to strangle the dog.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1QdMhQ8 ) reports Comer told police he wanted to be arrested. He’s being held in the Volusia County Jail on $5,000 bond.
