CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A father and son are now out of a home after an intense barricade situation in Cape Coral.

Police surrounded the house on the 2700 block of Southwest 11th Place for hours.

Authorities say this all started in Polk County overnight. Deputies there say 31-year-old Christopher Smittle was involved in a hit-and-run crash.

He took off with his son who witnesses say was limping.

After hours of police surrounding his home, Smittle peacefully came outisde.

Neighbors tell WINK News Smittle’s wife recently died of cancer and since then he took a turn for the worse.

“Ever since then seems like he has has a rough time and he started to get in to a lot of bad trouble and wrong decisions,” said a neighbor close to the family.

One neighbor says Smittle has a bad temper.

“He was very dominant, especially with his wife, he was very, he had to be on top of everything. and if he wasn’t and didn’t get his way he would snap and would go on a rage,” said neighbor Nicholas Heaney.

Thursday evening, Smittle’s 8-year old son was taken out of the home safely and places in an ambulance.

His  father was brought out of the home in handcuffs and placed in to a cop car.   Police say he is in custody under the Baker Act which holds people for psychiatric evaluation.
