Beware before renewing tags online

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The Lee County Tax Collector’s Office says if you renew your tags online you could be at risk.

It’s a statewide problem; websites that look official, but charge more for renewals. The tax collector’s office says they’re gotten several calls about the charge that they have nothing to do with.
“They are calling assuming that it’s our office,” said Larry Hart, Lee County Tax Collector, “and we have nothing to do with it.”

The websites are not breaking any laws. Some of the sites charge an additional $30 fee and don’t advise the customer until they get the bill.

“They’re complaining because the renewal notice says one thing and when they finish the transaction there’s an additional amount,” said Hart.

It’s very easy to confuse the official site with the others. The official website is leetc.com, however there is a .org that pulls up right under that is not.

Hart continues, “A lot of the time consumers are not aware and they give a lot of information and they don’t read the fine print on the website that disclose a lot of the fees.”
The other websites ask for a lot of personal information that the official website does not ask for.

County tax collectors are trying to come up with a plan to tackle this issue. Their goal is to regular these sites in order to protect consumers. In the meantime, they ask to beware before you buy.
