NEW ORLEANS (AP) – A federal appeals court is set to hear arguments on a Texas voter identification law condemned by the Justice Department as a means of suppressing minority voting.
Texas officials are appealing a federal judge’s ruling that the law is unconstitutional. They argue that the law doesn’t cause an unconstitutional burden on minorities.
A three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeal hears Tuesday’s arguments in New Orleans. The panel isn’t expected to rule immediately.
The law requires voters to provide one of seven kinds of photo identification to cast a ballot.
