COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- Nearly two dozen students were pepper sprayed and three were arrested after a senior prank with water balloons erupted into chaos. Now students and parents at Gulf Coast High School are questioning how this happened. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office says using pepper spray was justified, but some parents and students don’t feel the same way. It started as a senior prank with water balloons, but it quickly spiraled into a fight, with more than 400 students looking on. Three were arrested and dozens were affected by pepper spray. The sheriff’s office says the deputy who used the pepper spray was outnumbered, and the students were not obeying his orders. Some students and parents disagree. In several letters to the school, one concerned parent questioned the district asking “how can I tell my son to help a person in need, when his experience has been in this school, that the person who helped, got hurt and punished?” One student was disappointed to see the deputy at school today, telling the school district “I feel like allowing Officer Browning at school while kids have been suspended for two weeks is a little disrespectful.” One of the students arrested is Brock Dune. As he came out of jail Monday, he told WINK News it was all a misunderstanding. A student who graduated from Gulf Coast High School last year says some seniors tried the same prank a few years ago. The school district says at this point the prank and fight has not affected any graduation plans.
