GOLDEN GATE, Fla. – A Papa John’s delivery driver was robbed and beaten for pizza.

The victim was driving into the Mer Soleil Apartments off Jefferson Lane to deliver to apartment 206.

“I rang the bell and no one came out,” said Roberto. He preferred to only be identified by his first name.

He tells WINK News the delivery was a set-up. Deputies say the apartment the caller sent him to was vacant.

“He tackled me down and was beating me over the head,” said Roberto. “Two more came and started kicking me. I had pizza, it fell over and they grabbed it later.”

The kicks and punches came just seconds after he knocked on the vacant apartment.

“I turned to my right and saw someone coming at me, they tackled me and started beating me over the head,” said Roberto. “I pulled out my knife and they started backing off, one went into my car and he ran off too.”

The robbers didn’t steal his cash, cell phone and weren’t after jewelry. Instead, they stole $50 worth of pizza, wings and soda.

“I have had odd requests, but nothing like this.”

Deputies flooded the scene after Roberto called 911. K-9 units searched for the three suspects but they were already gone. Roberto says the men pulled their shirts over their heads to conceal their faces.

“It was pretty stupid, just for some pizza?”
