PUNTA GORDA, Fla.- Teacher error is to blame for dozens of Algebra I exams to be deemed invalid. “It was just a human error, she was confused in the directions on how to do that,” said Mike Riley, Charlotte County School spokesman. The administrator allowed students to use calculators when they weren’t supposed to. About 30 eight graders are affected. Two months from now they’ll retake the test. Some parents say they’re outraged. “If their child was passing this course, the fact that they couldn’t take this test is not going to cause them to be retained or fail this course,” said Riley. Riley also tells WINK News the district petitioned the commissioner of education for a closer retake date. The school was told July 13 is the soonest. “We accept the responsibility for the error and we understand with the high-stakes testing as it’s referred to that they don’t need the added pressure,” said Riley. The district will offer summer review classes for the test. The Algebra I exam won’t count towards a student’s grade, however, a passing grade is needed to graduate. A handful of other districts across the state experienced the same issue. Cypress Lake Middle School in Lee County is one of them.
