FORT MYERS, Fla.- The American Red Cross is calling on community members to join the team to make sure the South Florida Region Red Cross is ready when a storm strikes. For the third consecutive year, Red Cross chapters are offering the free train in a day program for volunteers who are willing to help their community during disasters. Known around the world for caring for others, Red Cross volunteers work in their communities to assist their neighbors when they need it most. “I can’t stress it enough. We need our communities prepared for disasters before they occur. It is critical to have trained volunteers on standby and ready to respond,” said Carlos Castillo, Regional Disaster Program Officer of the South Florida Red Cross. “Each year, we encourage new volunteers to join the Red Cross and support our mission of helping those in need.” The day-long training will not only prepare volunteers to support hurricane relief, but will also help them in preparing their families and themselves for hurricane season. The training will also provide individuals with the training needed to be invaluable volunteers who can make a difference in their communities when a disaster strikes.
