VERO BEACH, Fla. (AP) – A Vero Beach man has died four days after he was found unconscious in a van while being transported from the courthouse to the Indian River County jail.

Authorities say the death of 37-year-old Mitchell Brad Martinez was confirmed Wednesday morning. The autopsy, which could take several weeks for results to be made available, is planned for Thursday.

Martinez had been in a coma at an Indian River County hospital after deputies say they found him unresponsive in jail Friday.

Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar held a press conference Monday to rebut allegations from family members that Martinez’s death was a homicide. Friends and family had started a Facebook page called Justice for Brad Martinez.

On Wednesday, the sheriff’s office denied any responsibility in the death.
