Law enforcement will go head-to-head in hockey game on Saturday

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Lee County Rangers versus Fort Myers Enforcers.

This weekend, law enforcement officers will ditch the badge for a hockey stick in the first ever Public Safety Shootout. The event will raise money for the Florida Sled Hockey Program.

Two of those team members have inspiring stories of overcoming a disability.

“When the puck drops, it’s your side or their side,” said Florida Ice player Jayden Debiram.

The athletes are leaving their disabilities off the ice and putting on their game faces on for a life-changing sport.

“It’s not that you don’t know you’re hurt prior, but when you’re on the ice, it’s just me versus you,” said 50-year-old disabled veteran Troy Dconquest.

Sled hockey is designed for players with physical disabilities. Players sit in a bucket sled, on a blade and use a shortened hockey stick, with metal teeth to dig in the ice to get around.

Twelve-year-old Jayden Debiram and Dconquest both have conditions that affect their spine.

“Never skied, never played hockey, never did any of this stuff,” said Dconquest.

For these players, their dedication to the game is truly visible through the lens of our camera.

“My first ever goal was on my birthday,” Debiram told WINK News.

The Sled hockey program relies heavily on donations. This weekend, Debiram and Dconquest will watch law enforcement take to the ice in a fierce hockey game that will raise money for their own league.

“Them doing that for us is huge.”

“It’s going to be a great time, have a real great game. There is always competitiveness between us and Fort Myers Police Department,” said Lee County Ranger player, David Brown.

The game is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Skadium in Fort Myers. Admission is $5 at the door.
