LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Authorities confirm a 65-year-old man died while out swimming.

Crews raced to upper Captiva to search for the swimmer who went missing off shore near Panama Shell Drive and Gulf Lane.

Florida Fish and Wildlife officials say they believe the man who drowned was swimming after his boat.

Officials say the boat was anchored in the water but somehow was dislodged or the line broke.

The two people who were on the boat were out swimming and snorkeling when it happened.

As they saw their boat floating away, they swam after it trying to catch it. One of them made it to the boat, but the other person didn’t.

Authorities are waiting to release the identity of the man until after the family is notified.
