FORT MYERS, Fla.- Nearly five months have passed since the Fort Myers Police Department started an internal investigation into the wrongful arrest of NFL safety Nate Allen.

According to our partners at the News-Press, if the police department doesn’t finish its investigation in the next 50 days, the statute of limitations runs out which means no officers will face punishment.

Police detained Allen after a teenager claimed he was masturbating in his truck on U.S. 41.

The State Attorney’s Office cleared Allen, but his lawyer sent FMPD a letter of intent to sue. The attorney claimed Allen’s civil rights were violated when officers detained him.

City Council members are waiting for the police department to finish their internal investigation so they can start their external investigation.

The deadline for FMPD to finish that investigation is August 22. If they don’t complete it in 180 days, an officer cannot be disciplined regardless of the outcome.
