MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) – High tides in a low-lying portion of Miami Beach have caused unexpected flooding.

Weather officials say the water rose higher than expected during high tides on Thursday, resulting in seawater spilling over onto Indian Creek Drive. Some lanes were closed Thursday night.

This comes on the heels of flooding caused by an astronomical high tide last week when the supermoon tugged at the Atlantic Ocean.

National Weather Service meteorologist Robert Modella told the Miami Herald that factors like wind and currents can push a tide higher than expected. But Thursday was a calm day, leaving forecasters unsure about what influenced the tide.

The Herald reports National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration readings indicated Thursday night’s tide was about 3 ½ feet, which was a foot higher than predicted.
