FORT MYERS, Fla.- Since plunging into the ice bucket challenge last year, people are more familiar with ALS than ever before.

Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, it’s a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Often, the patient’s mental capacities remain as their muscle strength and control eventually give way to paralysis and an inability to communicate.

Here to shed some light on the disease is Dr. Cindy Drapal, director of neuroscience institute for Lee Memorial Health Systems.
