SCOTTSMOOR, Fla. (AP) – Florida now has a ninth national cemetery.

The Cape Canaveral National Cemetery was dedicated during a ceremony on Friday and will several the burial needs of veterans in central Florida.

Florida Today (http://on.flatoday.com/1QE5H2D ) reports the Veterans Administration purchased the land in July 2012 for $2.1 million. The construction company is expected to complete a portion of the cemetery which will be used for in-ground casket and cremation interments. That phase of the project is expected to provide for about 17,000 burials over the next decade.

Cemetery director Don Murphy says work should be completed enough to open the gates after Dec. 15, with burials possibly starting in early January.

The VA operates 134 national cemeteries and 33 soldiers’ lots and monument sites in 40 states and Puerto Rico.
