Plans unveiled for Fort Myers Beach transformation

FORT MYERS, Fla.- TPI Hospitality developers laid out plans for a new Fort Myers Beach Monday at Florida SouthWestern State College.

Plans include four hotels, a mall, a large conference center and a parking structure. The company has already purchased some pieces of land on Fort Myers Beach. But some residents feel it’s too much.

“What concerns me is, they speak as if it’s a done deal [like] they’ve already been making decisions. They said the community wants this and the community decided upon this, yet I’ve been in the community for 25 years and this is the first I’ve heard of it,” said Tammy Stockton.

Officials told a packed house their proposal would cut down on traffic and create a parking garage that could hold about 1,500 cars. But Stockton is a business owner, and said she isn’t sold.

“The traffic issues have always been a problem and there are some solutions that can be integrated. Not with this idea, but into the idea that is happening right now. Lee County has been redoing our roads and there are some other ideas out there,” said Stockton

Officials say the proposal is expected to create about 500 jobs for people living in the area.
