Christmas tree fire destroys Cape home

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – An artificial Christmas tree left plugged-in to the wall sparked a fire that destroyed a home on Santa Barbara Boulevard, according to the Cape Coral Fire Department.

Department spokesperson Andrea Schuch tells WINK News crews responded to the home just south of Gleason Parkway around 1pm Wednesday.

No one was home at the time. Santa Barbara was shut down in both directions for more than two hours as firefighters worked the scene.

Schuch reminds everyone with a Christmas tree to unplug it when they’re not home, or use a surge protector.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
