FORT MYERS, Fla.- A Lee County deputy caught a burglary in progress at a business near downtown Fort Myers and chased down three suspects that got away in a car, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.

It happened just before 4 a.m. Friday at the Morse Shore Plaza on the 4900 block of Palm Beach Boulevard.

Deputies say the suspects tried to escape in a getaway car and in the process almost backed over the deputy.

The suspects led authorities on a car chase down Palm Beach Boulevard but then lost control of the car and crashed into the Land Auto Supply store near Allen Street. Those suspects were arrested.

“Pretty sickening, my father opened the business in 1973 and been in the automotive business for about 80 years here in Fort Myers. It’s an usual way to end it there in that building…Terrible,” said Trace Land, owner of the Land Auto Supply Store.
