Cape Coral homeowner catches car burglar on surveillance cameras

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Neighbors near NW 8th Terrace in Cape Coral say thieves have been breaking into cars. However, one homeowner was able to catch them on surveillance cameras.

James Pollock has security cameras on just about every corner of his house, and now he’s adding a light and alarm that will go off is something is going on in his front yard.

Pollock says his wife’s car was broken into on Friday night. When he looked at the surveillance footage, he saw two people going through the car with a flashlight. One of the thieves then walks towards the other car and he can be seen on the video wearing white shorts and no shirt.

“He walked up here,” Pollock said. “And he came up and tried getting into my vehicle as well.”

The thieves got away with an iPod and a GPS, but when Pollock called Cape Coral police, they told him he wasn’t the only one hit that night.

“They told me that there had actually been some other houses hit in the area on the same night as well as as a vehicle stolen.”

Another victim said someone broke into their truck and used the garage door opener to go in and steal a gas can. According to Pollock, police said another neighbor’s truck was stolen the same night.

“It’s pretty random for the most part. I think a lot of it is younger kids, high school kids just out being kids and doing what they do.”

Pollock says even if the crime seems small at first, it could get much worse.

“They’re targeting unlocked cars but then you’re going to get the people who are targeting whatever cars have value, they’re willing to break windows,” Pollock explained. “You know, what’s next, coming into houses?”

Cape Coral police have not commented on the car burglaries.
