CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Among the items tossed around in Saturday’s tornado were trashcans, boats, cars and family photos.

A Cape Coral resident found five pictures in his yard on Southwest 10th Avenue after the EF2 tornado left the area.

“Shortly after the storm, we were walking around looking for the damage,” resident Steve Walker said. “And just through the field next to the house, we found these scattered about.”

Walker is unsure how far the photos traveled in the storm before landing near his home. But since then, he has tried to pin different family narratives to the photos.

“I believe we have a family reunion and just some friends getting together, some children. It looks to be at Disney World,” he said of one photo. “They look like the average American family. We all do the same things; that’s why it’s relatable.”

Walker said despite strong winds, the pictures were not terribly damaged and predicts them to be a couple of decades old. He said he hopes to reduce the impact of the tornado, which caused minor damage to his own home, by returning the pictures to their original family.

“These photos definitely mean something to somebody, so I just want to get them back,” Walker said.

For Walker, having the family reconnected with emblems of the past has become a personal mission.

“We lost my grandmother this year. My mom has stage four cancer and she doesn’t have long left,” he said. “With my mom’s cancer and losing my grandmother last year, it’s very close to home. It’s heartbreaking to lose these kind of memories.”
