PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Local lawmakers sponsored a bill that would add restrictions to police seizures. St. Pete legislator Jeff Brandes and Southwest Florida legislator Matt Caldwell introduced the bill, which still awaits votes from the House and Senate. Brandes said it would change current laws so a person would have to be facing charges to have their property taken. “It’s hard to believe that this is happening in America sometimes: to think that your assets could be seized and you could not be charged with a crime,” Brandes said. If the bill is passed, it could mean that people would avoid the seizure of property — something Antoinette Poskins said she knows all too well. Her boyfriend was arrested last year at a routine traffic stop for driving her van with a suspended license. Poskins, the registered owner of the van, was not charged or arrested but police took her vehicle. Florida Highway Patrol asked Poskins for $9,000 for her van before a judge granted it back to her.
