Collier County deputy violently attacked

NAPLES, Fla. – A man violently attacked a deputy who was responding to a call at Summer Lakes Apartments Monday, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Julio Rosa, 34, is facing a felony charges for battery to a deputy, resisting an officer with violence and trying to impede an officer’s communication after a man with him called police around 8 p.m., according to arrest records.

The man told police Rosa began acting strangely: sweating profusely, speaking on a phone with no one on the other line and declaring intentions to kill people.

When police arrived they found Rosa had locked himself in a room in the apartment., according to arrest records. A deputy was able to enter the room but was attacked by Rosa who had originally appeared to be sleeping, according to records.

Rosa jumped up from the bed, punching the deputy in the head and chest and nearly choking him out, a fellow deputy wrote in arrest records.

The deputy called for help and tased Rosa with no effect, according to arrest records. The commotion startled neighbors who gathered outside.

When additional deputies arrived, Rosa continued to fight, according to records.

“It sounds like they are having one heck of a time with somebody and they need more units,” a dispatcher is heard saying in audio recordings.

It took at least three deputies to restrain Rosa, according to audio recordings.

“He is still being held down by about three deputies,” someone said.

Both the deputy and Rosa were injured and taken to the hospital.Deputies believe Rosa, a known gang member and sex offender, could have been on drugs.
