Heated discussion continues over Bonita Spring school plans

Published: Updated:

ESTERO, Fla. – The Lee County School District and Bonita Springs residents will meet Wednesday evening at Estero High School to discuss the two sites for a proposed high school — an issue that has turned controversial as neighbors rejected the district’s plans.

The proposed sites are located off Bonita Beach Road east of Interstate-75 and off of Imperial Parkway.

Many residents said they are ready to put up a fight against the site closest to their homes. They have expressed their opposition by wearing red shirts and protesting nearly every school board meeting in the past few months.

Neighbors said the $7 million school will disrupt traffic patterns and bring unwanted noise to the area.

But parents are becoming restless with plans delayed by dissenters. They said they want the school construction to be begin soon so their children will have a new option for education.

No decision is expected in Tuesday’s meeting.
