PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- Authorities believe an early 2000s, silver Chevrolet pickup truck was involved in the crash that killed a 14-year-old boy on Feb. 26.

Devin Federly was riding his bicycle with friends along Sheehan Boulevard in Port Charlotte when he was hit and killed by the driver who left the scene of the crash.

The truck could be a light colored, 2003 to 2006 Chevrolet pickup, possibly a Silverado with either an extended cab or crew cab, officials said.

Terrilynn Peters was one of the first people on the scene when the teen was struck by the truck.

“The truck just, just appeared, it was going so fast,” Peters said.

Peters attempted to perform CPR on Federly while waiting for authorities but she was unable to save the teen’s life. She says Federly’s family thanked her for being with the teen “in his final moments,” but she’s still having trouble sleeping, knowing the driver responsible for taking the life of a young boy is still on the roads.

Meanwhile, neighbors say speed has always been a factor in the area.

“It shouldn’t have happened,” said Jodie Quattrocchi, “it could’ve been avoided.”

The truck most likely has damage to the driver’s side headlight and bumper area and possible damage to the windshield, authorities said. The vehicle could also be lifted and may have a chrome tool box in the bed of the truck.

Anyone with any information regarding the hit-and-run driver or vehicle can call the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-938-1800 or Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780- TIPS (8477).
