Lee County pays for economic help in North Fort Myers

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lee County is paying $50,000 to consultants tasked with producing a study about economic revitalization to North Fort Myers.

Residents to the area were invited to speak with consultants at meeting on Wednesday at the county administration building. Many said they felt that North Fort Myers has not been able to attract businesses like nearby areas.

Many retail spaces are empty and businesses are not moving to the area in large numbers. Lee County Commissioner Brian Hamman said it hasn’t been easy.

“It’s just really tough to see that everyday and you’re like ‘The traffic count is there. The river is here. Where is the business?'” he said.

Longtime resident Candy Andrews said North Fort Myers doesn’t have a problem with getting businesses to the area. They just leave, she said.

“Once business comes here, it needs to be encouraged to stay. I think that’s where the problem is. We attract but we don’t keep,” Andrews said.

The consultants hired by the city are expected to produce a study that will include suggestions about attracting new shops, restaurants and businesses. They may also suggest tax incentives, tax increment financing and adjusting the area’s appearance. The study should be complete before July.
