Lee County to pay $1.2M to whistleblowers

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Lee County was ordered to pay $1.2 million to three former county employees who spoke out against a company accused of abusing grants and loan programs.

VR Labs is a start-up energy company that was given $5 million to create 200 jobs with a move to Lee County. But VR Labs left the county after relocating its headquarters.

Three former Lee County employees spoke out about the start-up, which failed to pay the $5 million back. The whistleblowers also accused the county of its involvement in the alleged abuse.

They were then fired by administrators. A court ruled in favor of the former employees on Thursday.

A Lee County spokesperson said the county had legitimate reasons for the terminations and is considering an appeal.
