NAPLES, Fla.- The first reported case of the Zika virus in Collier County was confirmed Friday, the Department of Health in Collier County said.

The virus was contracted via travel, health officials said.

Collier County has now been added to Gov. Rick Scott’s declaration of public health emergency related to the virus.

The total number of confirmed Zika cases in Florida stands at 75, but health officials say only five cases are still exhibiting symptoms. There have been no locally-acquired cases of Zika in Florida.

The mosquito-borne virus may cause birth defects if contracted during pregnancy. Infection can cause a mild illness with fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. According to the CDC, symptoms can last between seven to 10 days.
