FORT MYERS, Fla.- The man accused of opening fire on police and causing a 7-hour-long standoff Thursday is being held on $1 million bond.

Velton Corbett, 33, faces eight counts of attempted murder for firing shots at officers before barricading himself inside his home on C Street near Henderson Street.

In court Friday morning, the State Attorney’s Office and some Fort Myers police officers were present to say Corbett is a habitual offender who they consider a danger to the community.

Corbett has served two separate prison terms for a variety of offenses. He’s also a registered sex offender.

Fort Myers Police Department Cpt. Jim Mulligan said officers’ main goal on Thursday was to get Corbett out of the home peacefully.

“There was no rush. It was all about being patient, sitting tight, holding,” Mulligan said. “We sat through it and we prevailed.”
