Fort Myers Film Festival to make a difference

Published:

FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Fort Myers Film Festival is growing in its sixth year.

It used to be a small affair, with people asking “where is it?” Now, the event is showing 75 films in eight locations over four days, said founder Eric Raddatz.

“These are films that can point out our differences, important films that may help people understand each other,” Raddatz said.

Among those is “Maya Angelou and Still I Rise,” co-produced by Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack. It has previously been seen only at the prestigious Sundance Festival.

“Maya Angelou is such an inspiration.  She overcame tremendous obstacles. She was raped at seven years old, she suffered vicious racism in the Jim Crow south,” said Hercules. “But she overcame and forgave. Hers is a message of hope.”

The film will be shown at the Davis Art Center in Fort Myers at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, April 8.
