72-year-old motorcyclist critically injured in Cape Coral crash

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Alcohol played a factor in a crash Tuesday night that sent a motorcyclist to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Cape Coral Police Department said.

Just before 8:30 p.m., witnesses say Jerry Freeman, 72, was traveling north on Chiquita Boulevard when he was struck by a Jeep, driven by Claudia Szecsei, 30. Police say Szecsei did not see the motorcyclist and turned while heading south from Chiquita Boulevard to go east on Gleason Parkway, directly hitting Freeman.

Several witnesses say both vehicles had a solid green light.

Freeman was wearing a helmet but was taken to a nearby hospital as a trauma alert after landing on his head, police said. Szecsei and the passenger of her vehicle were not injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
