Collier deputies on alert after 6th suspicious incident

NAPLES, Fla. – More deputies are patrolling an area in Collier County after the sixth recent incident involving a stranger approaching a child.

A 16-year-old girl told deputies that she was walking on North 8th Street toward North 91st Avenue when a man driving in a minivan cut her off on Sunday around 5 p.m., according to Collier County Sheriff’s Office. The girl walked around the van’s passenger side and the man offered to take her to work but she declined, CCSO said.

His van was tan and had “random junk and boxes” in it, CCSO said.

She described the man as heavy-set, clean shaven with grey hair to his ears in his 60s, CCSO said. The girl also told deputies the man had a high-pitched voice, CCSO said.

Authorities do not believe all the incidents are connected.

“We’ve got about three or four different car descriptions,” said Lt. Ken Becker with CCSO. “We’ve got descriptions of a Hispanic male, black male, an older white male with a beard and long hair and an older man that’s clean cut.”

Deputies have stepped up patrols in the areas of where the incidents have happened. Officials are also asking the community to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Collier County Sheriff’s Office at 239-252-9300, or if you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
