Caretaker accused of stealing elderly patient’s credit card

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A 26-year-old woman who worked at Cypress Cove is accused of stealing a patient’s credit card to go shopping.

Janai Hernandez was arrested for exploitation of the elderly after the victim’s daughter first discovered in December her mother’s card had been fraudulently used.

The report states Hernandez used the victim’s card to buy more than $260 worth of items at a Walgreens store.

“We were troubled hearing this,” said Ed Stransenback, public relations coordinator for Cypress Cove. “We immediately assisted the family who brought it to our attention by taking it to the sheriff’s department.”

The victim suffers from dementia, according to Hernandez’s arrest report.

Stransenback says the facility is safe and their vetting process is strict for employees, “we work to insure the protection, the privacy, and the safety of all of our residents.”

Hernandez has been fired from the facility.
